Ovid's Metamorphoses Costume Design

In my design concept for Erysichthon from Mary Zimmerman’s 1996 play Metamorphoses, I have utilised colour, form, and texture to illustrate a character whose insatiable greed in desiring total domination of all resources leads to him becoming cursed and frighteningly devouring his physical form.
Large forms are attached to his joints – his knee, his hip, his back, his shoulder, his whole hand, slowly consume his thin body throughout a Musical, restricting his movement, muffling his voice, and subverting the requirements of musical theatre costuming.
Created with oil paint, pastels, and Adobe Photoshop, my rendered design is inspired by the surrealist paintings by Francis Bacon, the texture of bone marrow, as well as the shiny look of mining figures who destroy Indigenous sites of importance, to emphasise the horrific nature of both Erysichthon’s actions, and resulting physical transformation.
